Tips for the Senior Guys Photo Session

If most guys are honest, they do a senior photo session to appease their mom. 😀 Overall, most guys tend to be less than enthusiastic about their senior photography session, but I can assure you it can be an enjoyable time together and can be accomplished in a short time just by following these five simple steps.

Five steps to a relaxed senior session for guys…

  1. Bring yourself to the session well-rested, nourished, and with a bottle of water to stay hydrated during the session. We don’t want anyone getting hangry during the session.

  2. Bring an open mind. Most guys are worried about what to do with their hands and how to pose. As we begin the session I will guide you with where to place your hands, and how to sit, stand or lean toward the light in natural ways.

  3. Bring several outfits, more than you think you will need. While we probably will not use them all, it is helpful to have a variety of options to coordinate with the background or setting. I usually advise a casual look, a more formal look, and a personality look (cowboy boots/hat, jerseys, varsity jacket, cap & gown, etc). Have all items pressed and wrinkle-free. (Do not bring items in a duffel bag - you want to make your mom happy! remember?! Make sure all items are well-fitting and comfortable and make you feel good. Bring a gray or black t-shirt to wear under other shirts. Avoid stripes, plaids, and large graphics or logos. Solid colors typically photograph best.

  4. Don’t make any drastic changes just before your session like shaving your head or new hair color. A trim a week or two before your photo session is usually best. Come to your session clean-shaven as stubble does not photograph well and costs extra to re-touch.

  5. Bring along props that are important to you such as sports items, musical instruments, medals, or items related to your hobbies, etc. This can help add personality to your photos.

Bonus tip! Have FUN! Which is exactly what we did for Braden’s recent senior session.

Braden is a 2023 graduate of Lindale High School. I’ve watched him grow into a handsome young man. He’s exceptionally bright with a great future ahead of him. I can’t wait to see what lies ahead for him in this next chapter!
