Big Sur & Bixby Bridge

Our first stop on the way to the Big Sur area was to drive through the charming part of Carmel-by-the-Sea to Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. Once again we found ourselves saying that this was one of our favorite stops on the trip. Despite the haze/fog settling in, this place offered stunning and magnificent views that appealed to all of the senses.

When we first arrived we only saw one other person on the trail, but by the time we left, the small parking lot had filled up. We were so excited to see lions resting on the beach of China Cove especially since we went to the Sea Point Trail afterward and saw none where they supposedly are normally abundant.

Above are views on the Bird Island Trail. There were an abundant amount of birds covering the rocks. We enjoyed watching the waves crash into the rocks and were amazed at the height of the waves.

Our next stop was Bixby Bridge - by the time we arrived late morning the haze/fog was getting thicker by the moment and it had gotten so thick that it made seeing the landscape a challenge. Because of the closure of Hwy 1 due to the landslide in 2021, we knew we would be returning later in the evening to return to our hotel. I was very hopeful that the fog would burn off later in the day, but unfortunately, it did not so my photos of the most photographed bridge were lacking. The bridge itself was magnificent to see with its graceful architecture amongst the magnificent setting. Once again, this gives me a great reason to return for another visit!
